Answer :

Particle Nature of Electromagnetic Radiation :

  • The radiations emitted by hot objects are over a wide range of wavelengths.
  • The instensities of radiations of different wavelengths depend on the temperature of the body.
  • An ideal body, which emits and absorbs radiations of all frequencies uniformly, is called the black body.
  • The radiations emitted by the black body is called black body radiation.
  • A black body is a perfect radiator.
  • A black body radiates some amount of energy per unit area as it absorbs from its surrounding in any given time.
  • Temperature increase, increases the intensity of radiations along with the wavelength.
  • Further, after reaching the maximum value, it starts decreasing.

Planck's Quantum Theory -

  • It was introduced by Max Planck.
  • He assumed that the emission and absorption of radiations occur from atoms in the wall of black body, that is, oscillator.
  • He also assumed that the radiations can be sub divided into chunks of energy.
  • According to him, that the atoms and molecules emitter absorb energy in discrete quantities and not in continuous manner.
  • The smallest quantity of energy that can be emitted or absorbed in electromagnetic radiation form was called as quantum by Max Planck.
  • The energy of a quantum of radiation (E) is proportional to its frequency (v), and it is expressed as : E = hv.
  • "h" is a proportionality constant called the Planck's constant.
  • The value of h = 6.626 × 10^{-34} Js.
  • He explained the distribution of intensity in the radiation from black body as function of frequency of wavelength at different temperatures.
  • He also explained quantization as a staircase. The energy can take any values from the set given by him, bu can not be in between of those values. The set is : E = 0, hv, 2hv, 3hv....nhv.
