particles of matter attract each other but why the two pieces of a pencil attract each other

Its simple as the paricles of pencils cant join after breaking because they are stable or they are not in perfect atmosphere.. Hope this will help

pencil is made up of grafite and grafite is also a matter and as u mention in the question particles of matter attract each other due to universal source of gravity .
