well actually yes they were succeeded but originally the division between hindu and muslim was started at the time when Mughals were there ...

Hindus had to pay zajiya taxes just to live in their own home land where as muslims were free from these taxes that's the main reason why many hindu converted into muslims ..

britisher just used this crack to benefit themselves the partition of Bengal wasn't because the region is divided in hindu muslim but still britisher just used the hate among the community to benefit them .

outcomes was harsh genocide of minorities particularly hindu started and ethnic cleansing of Hindus took place in the bengal region .. resulting in mass migration from Bengal to other part of India .
