Cabbage is morphologically the vegetative bud of the plant. It consists of the tip of growing stem with rounded , overlapping leaves. These leaves are formed on nodes but as the internodes don’t elongate much the leaves remain crowded or overlapped to form a big bud. The exposed mature leaves turn green due to formain of chloroplasts but inner leaves remain pale and are tender.

The leafy nature of these rounded appendages is indicated by distinct venation in them. So cabbage is an underdeveloped compact leafy bud enclosing the growing stem tip.

The internodes between leaves are small and they remain suppressed. So leaves remain crowded around the stem tip.
