I was delighted when mother's first attempt was
unsuccessful. We had gone to tea at the home of a local
dentist whose son, Freddy Volpe, a lad about two years
older to me, took me aside and warned me not to let myself
be sent there. With great skill and vivid description he drew
hideous pictures of what went on there and told me that I
should hate the school as much as he did. Then one
dreadful afternoon my mother told me that I had got in'.
