Passage 3 Once upon a time there lived a man whose first wife had died and who was now married to a very haughty and mean woman. The second wife had two daughters who were exactly like her. By his first wife the husband had one daughter, named Cinderella, who was very sweet and good-tempered. After few days of the wedding, the step-mother began to show her bad temper. She could not bear her step-daughter's good qualities. She compelled the poor girl to do all the hard work of the household. It was she who washed the dishes and scrubbed the stairs, polished the floors and waited on the two ugly daughters. The two daughters slept on soft feather beds in elegant rooms. Cinderella lay in a wretched garret on an old straw mattress. Yet the poor girl bore this ill-treatment very patiently and did not complain to her father who was completely under the influence of his wife.
