In the history of our country the name of Ashoka the Great is always
remembered with great respect and affection because he was a kind and able.se
ruler, a statesman and a religious teacher also. But Ashoka was not so in the early sa
part of his life. In the beginning he was an ambitions emperor and a ruthless ar
warrior. He fought a big battle against kalinga and comquered it. But when he on
visited the battle-field after the victory, he was filled with remose. He saw hun-o
dreds and thousands of people either dead or injured. The relatives of the dead in
soldiers were weeping and they blamed the king for bringing so much misery to co
their lives. The battle of Kalinga proved to be the turning point in Ashoka's life. th.
He suddenly saw the importance of kindness and goodwill towords all human w
beings. He now decided to conquer people by love and kindness. He sprad the
message of the Buddha thoughout the world,
