In present time the uses of plastic or polybags have become very common. It is made of polyethylene. Polyethylene is made out of petroleum. During the manufacturing process of polybags numerous toxic chemicals are released; which are very harmful to our environment. On the other hand, most of the polybags are non-biodegradable and they don’t decompose into the soil. Again thrown plastic or polybags in the dustbin affect the wildlife. Animals may eat them with food and it can cause death sometimes. Polythene adds fuel to artificial flood. It blocks the drains and causes artificial flood during the rainy days. In present time too much use of polybags has become a matter of worry. It causes harm to our environment. People have become habitual of using polybags and as a result of its excessive use, the environment is polluting. One of the allotropic forms of sulphur is plastic (or amorphous) sulphur. It is also known as gamma–Sulphur, is a tough elastic substance that is formed when molten sulphur is poured into cold water.
Preparation:
Plastic sulphur is prepared by suddenly cooling the molten sulphur (near its boiling point) by pouring it into cold water. Yellow rubbery ribbons of sulphur are formed. They are very soft and can be stretched easily.
We can implement the following ways to reduce overuse of plastics:
➣Bring own shopping bags. Re-use of the plastic bags whenever it is possible to do so. Avoid re-use of plastic bags for storage of food items.
➣Stop buying bottled water. Use a reusable bottle or mug for beverages, even when ordering from a to-go shop.
➣Insist shopkeepers to use paper bags or jute bags to carry goods purchased.
➣ Buy laundry detergent and dish soap in boxes instead of plastic bottles. Cardboard can be more easily recycled and made into more products than plastic.
➣While picking up takeout or bringing home restaurant leftovers, be prepared with own reusable containers.
➣ Avoid buying frozen foods because their packaging is mostly plastic.
➣ Pack lunch in reusable containers and bags. Also, opt for fresh fruits and veggies and bulk items instead of products that come in single serving cups.
