Passage: Tobacco smoking has only recently been accepted as a major health hazard, despite its practice in Western countries for more than 400 years, and much longer elsewhere. Cigarettes became popular at the end of world war I because they where cheap, convenient and easier to smoke than pipes and cigars. The milder smoke can be more readily inhaled, allowing nicotine (a powerful addictive poison) to be quickly absorbed into main bloodstream. Lung cancer is the most widely known and most harmful effect of smoking. 98% of cases are associated with cigarette smoking. The damaging components of cigarette smoking clude tar, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide. Many of these harmful chemicals occur in greater concentration in side stream smoke (passive smoking) than in mainstream smoke (inhaled) due to the presence of a filter in the cigarette.

Question: Why is passive smoking more dangerous than active smoking?

Answer:

All smoke from burning nicotine products contains harmful chemicals (toxins). Even nonsmokers inhaling other people's smoke breathe in these toxins. Side stream smoke from the end of a cigarette, cigar or pipe is unfiltered. It has more harmful toxins than mainstream smoke that someone breathes out.
