Given : Patrick drives from P to Q at an average speed of 40 mph

drive back from Q to P is at an average speed of 45 mph and takes two minutes less.

To Find : How far, in miles, is it from P to Q

Solution:

Let Say Distance from P to Q  =  D miles

Distance = Speed x time

Patrick drives from P to Q at an average speed of 40 mph

=> Time Taken = D/40  hr

=> Time Taken = 60 x D/40  Mins

=> Time Taken = 3D/2  Mins

Patrick drives from Q to P at an average speed of 45 mph

=> Time Taken = D/45  hr

=> Time Taken = 60 x D/45  Mins

=> Time Taken = 4D/3  Mins

takes two minutes less.

=> 4D/3   = 3D/2 -  2

=> 8D  = 9D  -  12

=> D = 12

12 Miles  from P to Q
