Solution

______________

First Method

Let Paul's salary is Rs 100

spent on food = 10% of 100 = 10

remaining = 100 - 10 = 90

spent on transportation = 20% of 90 = 18 .. ( 20/100 × 90 = 18)

total expenditure = 10 + 18 = 28

saving = 100 - 28 = 72

But actual saving is Rs 3600

Now using unitary method

If saving is 72 , the the salary was = 100

If saving is 3600 then salary would be = 100/72 × 3600 = Rs 5,000 .....Ans

Second Method

Let the salary of Paul be Rs X

expenditure on food = 10% of X = X/10

remaining = X - X/10 = 9X/10

expenditure on transportation = 20% of 9X/10 = 9X/50

remaining (saving) = 9x/10 - 9X/50 = 36X/50

but the actual saving is Rs 3600

∴ 36X/50 = 3600 = Rs 5,000.........Ans
