Phosphorous has d-orbitals & hence can accommodate the electrons from CI into them,in case of N the d-orbitals are absent & electrons can be accommodated only in p-orbitals.Hence PCI5 exists.

Answer:

▪︎Phosphorous has d-orbitals and hence can accommodate the electrons from Cl into them, Incase of N the d-orbitals are absent and electrons can be accommodated only in p- ornitals. Hence PCl exists. because nitrogen is small in size since it is the first element in the 15th group.
