Pearl Buck depicts the servants in a way to convey a message about Japanese people and culture. Japanese people are highly patriotic and love their duties.

The servants, as well as Sadao represented Japanese culture aptly. The servants, though loyal to Dr. Sadao's family, left their jobs because their master had helped the POW, who was the enemy of the nation.

Sadao, reflected his culture by saving the life of the POW. Dr. Sadao also did his duty to the nation by informing General Takima about the American soldier. The General forgot to take action. However, if he had taken action, he would have got him assassinated. Dr. Sadao could no longer wait for the General’s assassins because he did not like the idea of killing someone. Finally, he helped the soldier escape by providing him with a boat and other provisions.

Thus, the doctor as well as the servants are apt symbols of great Japanese culture.
