Pectin found in the cell wall of root cells form the network matrix of cell wall and is hydrophilic. This network is formed by cross linking of galacto uronic acid with the help of calcium bridges and ionic interactions. Cellulose forms microfibrils in the cell wall. The microfibrils are made up by joining glucose monomers. They are also hydrophilic. The hydrophilic nature of pectin and cellulose help in water absorption function of root hairs.
