Pele was born on October 23, 1940 in Brazil. He is now known as
‘The King of Football’. As a child he used to shine shoes to earn money.
He could not have a proper football, so he and his friends used to play
with a sock stuffed with newspaper, tied with string. They used to play
barefoot. They called their team the shoelass ones. Once he even stole
peanuts from a goods train and sold them to buy a leather football.
He was discovered by another great footballer Waldemar de
Brito in 1956. Brito became his instructor, Pele took part in the Football
world cup events of 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970. During his career,he
scored 1216 goals in 1254 matches. It is a world record for a single
football player. No footballer has been able to beat his record so far.
