pencil dipped in water appears to be bent at the interface of air and water due

to the refraction of light. The refraction of light occurs because the speed of light

changes when light travels from one medium to another. Therefore, the pencil willnot appear to be bent to the same extent when it is dipped in kerosene in

turpentine. The speed of light will be different in kerosene than that in water.

1. Starting from your vision, how many mediums do the light ray travels?

2. Instead of pencil if you dip your pen in water, will the case be same?

3. What is the refractive index of water?

4. What is the refractive index of kerosene?
