India is called as Indian Peninsula because it is surrounded by the Indian ocean on the south, the Arabian sea on the west and the Bay of Bengal on the east.

Note: The whole of Gujrat comes under this region.

  • The India subcontinent is a landmass that is formed by the splitting of the Gondwanaland landmass in earlier periods of history and this continent is in the shaped in the forms of a peninsular having water all over the three sides and the plateau side of the landmass was formed by the spilling of the lava that formed the Deccan traps.
  • This Deccan plateau is the largest plateau region of the southern India and it roses 100 meters in the north and to 1000 meters in the south and forms triangle with the Indiana coastline. This plateau is located within the western and the eastern ghats and thud has an average 600 meters of elevation.
  • Hence most of the rivers of the plateau flow to southern direction, due to the presence of the lava this region is rich in black soil good for cotton cultivation.
