Its because they (read your ungrateful acquaintances) don't pay that much weightage to nicety as you do.In fact in this world almost every 9 person out of the 10 person will be ungrateful. But that shouldn't hinder you to be nice to people ( of course you need to draw the line where you just being nice and where you are just being taken granted or are used).
Even if that 1 person out of the aforementioned 10 people acknowledges your effort , you should feel encouraged isn't it.
And anyways ....good done with the intention of good returns isn't the virtuous good. That's why they say "neki kar dariya me dal".
Destiny has its own ways of paying you back for your good deeds. Don't be dependant on the mortal souls to pay you back.
