People living in the mountains often suffer from goitre, while people living in the coastal areas don’t.

  • Iodine is a key element in maintaining normal thyroid function , the deficiency of which leads to goitre.
  • In mountains the soil and water have lower amounts iodine , leading to lowered intake of iodine.

people living in coastal areas do not have goitre because:

  • Goitre is caused due to the deficiency of iodine in the diet.
  • People in coastal areas feed upon mainly sea foods which contain sufficient amount of iodine , so they usually do nt suffer from goitre
