People suffering from mild diarrhoea and vomiting are given oral rehydration therapy, often abbreviated as ORT. The ORT employs the use of electrolytic solution known as ORS in order to rehydrate the patient. However, it must not be used orally in cases of severe dehydration, diarrhoea or vomiting. Instead, the correct treatment involves intravenous infusions of the ORS.

According to WHO recommendations, the ORS consists of 2.6 grams of salt (NaCl), 2.9 grams of trisodium citrate dehydrate (C6 H5 Na3 O7 ⋅ 2H2O), 1.5 grams of potassium chloride (KCl) and 13.5 grams of anhydrous glucose (C6 H12 O6) per litre of water.

These electrolytes must be properly balanced to ensure that they do not have a negative effect.

The minerals in ORS include sodium, potassium, chloride, glucose and citrate.

EXPLANATION:

ORS is given to people suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting to replace the water lost. Oral Rehydration Therapy involves drinking water with modest amounts of salts and sugars.

ORS solutions are available in packets and can also be made at home. The packet ORS solution contains all the essential minerals in the required quantity. At home, ORS can be prepared by adding salt or sugar to water.
