★ Q. - People usually keep burning coal in their closed room during winter season. Why is it advised to keep the door open?

★ Ans. -

♦ Firstly, when we burn coal, obviously it would produce heat and smoke. Heat is fine but the smoke which is given out when inhaled by any person can go right to the lungs and lead to breathing problems and lung diseases.

♦ Secondly, coal is around 60% - 90% carbon. So, when this carbon is burnt in open air (sufficient supply of Oxygen), it burns to form non poisonous Carbon dioxide (CO2).

# C + O2 → CO2 (complete combustion)

♦ But, when the doors and windows are closed, there is an inefficient supply of air (Oxygen). So, greater amount of Carbon burns in a smaller amount of Oxygen. This produces Carbon monoxide (CO). CO is a very poisonous gas and often kills people without warning (as it is colorless and even odourless). CO forms carboxyhemoglobin in our blood and cuts off the supply of Oxygen to the cells. As a result, we may even die.

# 2C + O2 → 2CO

♦ As we have just said, inhaling air with high CO level even may be fatal. So, a person may die if he/she sleeps in a closed room heated by a coal fire.

•°• It is advised either not to use coal in a closed room, or to keep open the doors.

Heya mate, Here is ur answer

\red{\mathfrak{Question-}} People usually keep burning coal in their room during winter season. Why is this advised to keep the door open?

\blue{\mathfrak{Answer-}}Coal is a form of carbon that burns in air and react with oxygen to form carbon - dioxide. Carbon dioxide is completely non-poisonous gas( but it increases global warming ) .

C+O2-------->CO2

⏩But when the doors are kept close, there becomes a shortage of air as fresh air can't enter the room. We know that in the absence of air, heating carbon (coal) can lead to the formation of Carbon - monoxide which is better known as "Silent Killer" as its extremely poisonous gas. Being more soluble in haemoglobin than oxygen, it displaces Oxygen and forms "Carboxy-Heamoglobin" .

2C+O2--------->2CO

Moreover, burning a low quality coal produces smoke that is extremely harmful for the health of a person as it causes respiratory diseases.
