many social reformers in India who have worked for the betterment of society

and have fought against the social evils. Some of them are:


Raja Ram Mohan

Roy 1772 - 1833 - He was from Bengal. He fought against the practice of Sati

Pratha.


Ishwar Chandra

Vidyasagar - He was born in 1820. He was from Bengal. He worked to uplift the

status of women. He supported widow remarriage. He contributed a lot in the

field of education. 


Vivekananda - He was born in 1863. He was from Bengal. He

was against religious dogmas and superstitions.


Swami Dayananda

Saraswati - He was born in 1824. He was from Gujarat. His slogan was 'Return to

Vedas'. He argued against the wrong things which were being propagated in the

name of religion. He believed that caste system should not be based on birth.

It should be on the basis of occupation. He started a campaign against

untouchability and child marriage.


Dr. Bhimrao

Ambedkar - He was born in 1891. He was from Mhow, a town in the Central

Province of India. He fought for the rights of the untouchables.


Jyotiba Phule -

He was born in 1827. He was from Maharashtra. He supported women's education

and widow remarriage. He was against child marriage and untouchability. He used

the word dalit for untouchables.
