Performance appraisal is very important but the method of evaluating an employee's work should not be a conventional one. For example the evaluation should not look on the work hours being put by the employee or overtime rather it should consider the contribution made by the employee in the companies progress . In some department creativity is important and in some hard work so evaluation should be done accordingly.
