Perhaps you have enjoyed riding on a Ferris wheel at an invented by George Washington Ferris for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Claire and her friends are celebrating the end of the school year at a local amusement park. Claire has always been afraid of heights, and now her friends have talked her into taking a ride on the amusement park Ferris wheel. As she waits nervously in line she has been able to gather some information about the wheel. By asking the ride operator, she found out that this wheel has a radius of 50 feet, and its center is 65 feet above the ground. The Ferris wheel makes one complete rotation counterclockwise every 40 seconds.

With this information, Claire is trying to figure out how high she will be at different positions on the wheel.
1. How high will Claire be when she is at the top of the wheel? (To make things easier, think of her location as simply a point on the circumference of the wheel's circular path.)
2. How high will she be when she is at the bottom of the wheel?

Claire be 115 feet when she is at the top of the wheel

Claire be  15 feet when she is at the bottom of the wheel

Given :

  • Ferris wheel has a radius of 50 feet,
  • center is 65 feet above the ground

To Find:

How high will Claire be when she is at the top of the wheel

How high will she be when she is at the bottom of the wheel

Solution:

Radius = 50 feet

Center is 65 feet above ground

She is at the top of the wheel then her height from the ground  will be

Height of center + radius of Wheel

= 65 + 50

= 115 feet

Claire be 115 feet when she is at the top of the wheel

She is at the bottom of the wheel then her height from the ground  will be

Height of center - radius of Wheel

= 65 - 50

=  15 feet

Claire be  15 feet when she is at the bottom of the wheel
