During the oesophageal phase of swallowing (throughout the action of muscles), food is pushed through the oesophagus by involuntary muscle contractive muscular movements called peristalsis.
This phenomenon, peristalsis, is produced by involuntary contraction of circular muscles controlled by cerebrum in the esophagus lying just above and around the top of the bolus and simultaneous contraction of the longitudinal muscles which are lying around the bottom of and just beneath the bolus.
There is a least peristaltic involuntary movement involved in the region of rectum in the human being.
