Answer:

because soft iron has high permeability but low retentivity whereas steel has high retentivity then softiron so once it acquires magnetism it does not loose it easily where as in case of soft iron when current flows through it behaves as magnet but as current stops flowing it looses its magnetism so steel is used for permanent magnet so that it doesnot loose its magnetic properties easily
