The common man faces many problems in a general bogie, including overcrowding, discomfort due to seasonal temperatures, noise and hygiene issues.
- Overcrowding- Most people who travel without reservation barge into the general bogie and sit on others' seats; so, very often there are more people than permitted in a general bogie. This cramps the space even for those who have reserved their seats.
- Discomfort due to seasonal temperatures- Since a general bogie is not air-conditioned, the temperature gets too warm during summers and too cold during winters. During the rainy season, water often leaks in through the windows as well.
- High noise levels- The general bogie has many vendors coming into the compartment. They usually call out loudly. Also, where there are so many passengers, it is bound to be noisy.
- Hygiene- The general compartment has too many passengers and only four toilets at each end of the bogie. The toilets get dirty quickly as does the floor, and the bogie is cleaned only at some stations, forcing the passengers to travel in unhygienic conditions.
