In the beggining Pescud was slightly intimidated by Colonel Allyn. He nearly lost his nerve and tried to sell him some plate glass. The COlonel got him to sit down and Pescud told him the entire story of how he folllowed Jessie from Cincinnati. He also talked about his salary, prospects, and mentioned his code of living which was to always be decent and right in your home town. They talked for two hours, and Pescud told COlonel Allyn everything he knew. He asked him to give him a chance and if he couldn't hit it off with Jessie he'd clear out. He knew that he was of no royal lineage but would do his best. They exchanged narratives and ended uo being very good friends.

Answer:
Pescud tried to befriend the father of the girl whom he had been following doggedly. He was at first confused. So he tried to sell him some plate-glass. When he got over his nervousness he told him everything. He did not even hide the fact that he wanted to marry his daughter.
