Mrs. Adis by Sheila Kaye Smith is story that takes place some time in October 1920’s in a cottage owned by the Adis Family. Mrs. Adis prepares a supper for Mr. Tom Adis at home while he is patrolling the Scotney Castle woods (Cinder wood) with three keepers (game), Old Crotch, and two Boormans).  The guards surprised a poacher who shot and killed one of them

Explanation:

  • Peter Crouch, the poacher, wants to hide in the house of Adis, because he had shot a man in the woods, although he was not sure if he had killed the man. The man that Peter Crouch shot was patrolling the woods along with three other people who had taken Peter Crouch by surprise while he was hunting for something in Cinderwood (basically poaching)
  • Since Tom was Peter's good friend,  Peter knew that Tom would not turn him away. After admitting to Mrs. Adis that he had shot a man, but was not sure if he had killed him (because the target was too dark to see), he asked for permission to stay.
  • Now the guards were searching for Peter Crouch and Peter Crouch in the fear of being caught goes into Mrs. Adis and confess all that happened and request her to help him hide
