Petr is 5 km far from the starting point.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the initial position of Petr is A and AB = 8 km.

Then, BC = 3 km. and CD = 12 km.

If we draw a line from a towards North, then AE will form and hence CD = CE + ED and CE = BA = 8 km and AE = BC = 3 km.

Therefore, the final position of Petr is D and the distance from his initial position is AD that we have to calculate.

Now, Δ AED is a right triangle and AE = 3 km and ED = 4 km.

So, applying Pythagoras Theorem, we have AD² = AE² + ED²

⇒ AD² = 3² + 4² = 25

AD = 5 km.

Therefore, Petr is 5 km far from the starting point. (Answer)
