- A nonrenewable resource is a resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption. Most fossil fuels, such as oil, natural gas and coal are considered nonrenewable resources in that their use is not sustainable because their formation takes billions of years.
- Petrol , diesel and kerosene are not considered to be a renewable resource because the rate of depletion (or extraction) is many orders of magnitude greater than the rate of creation. For all practical purposes, the amount of petroleum available for human civilization to extract is fixed.
- Petroleum is formed when pockets of biomass trapped in sediment are moved through geological processes, over millions of years, into areas of very high temperature and pressure within the Earth's crust
