Answer:

Oil refineries convert crude oil, coal and natural gas into fuels like petroleum, diesel, paraffin and kerosene etc. There are various chemical processes which include heating and chemical reactions.

Petroleum refineries:

  1. Pollute air, water and land
  2. Our air is polluted by up to 100 pollutants emitted from stacks and leaking equipment at the refineries.
  3. Our land is polluted from the large amount of harmful wastes which needs to be dumped in the land.
  4. Our water is polluted by the harmful wastes and toxins released from the refineries into our waterways. The fallout from the air pollutants also contribute to the pollution. Accidental oil spils also pollute the ground water and open water ways.

Hope this helps.
