pH has a greater importance in our daily life explain by giving three examples
Answers
PH plays an important role in our everyday life. A few examples are:-
1. In our digestive system - Hydrochloric acid is produced in the stomach to help in digesting food. However, when the amount of acid exceeds a certain limit it causes acidity and pain. This acidity can be neutralized by taking a mild base called as an antacid.
2. pH of soil – Plants grow only in soils that have a definite pH range. So, highly acidic soils are treated with quicklime or calcium carbonate to reduce its acidity.
3. Tarnished vessels – Copper vessels are tarnished due to the formation of a layer of basic copper oxide. This can be removed when it is rubbed with the citric acid from a lemon. Copper oxide forms copper citrate with citric acid and is washed away giving a shine to the vessels.
1. Our body works within ph range of 7.0 to 7.8
2. Tooth decay starts when ph in mouth is lower than 5.5. Bacteria present in mouth produce acids by degradation of sugar and food particles remaining in the mouth.
3. Acids produced by stomach helps in digestion. If too muvh acid is formed ; people take antacids ex. milk of magnesia .
