The oxides of nitrogen and sulfur are present in the air or atmosphere. When rain falls then nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide dissolve in rain water.

Since these oxides are acidic in nature and when they dissolve in rain water then the rain water also becomes highly acidic in nature.

Therefore, due to this reason pH of acid rain is sometimes as low as 2.

The main reasons behind this can be

  • Increase in pollution by industries -

thus releasing more So2,No2,or other Acidic oxides which in prescence of electric Dischrage get converted into acid by Reacting with water in the clouds and is brought down as acud rain
