The pH of a solution of a strong acid is 5.0. What will be the pH of the solution obtained after diluting the given solution 100 times?

For the pH of 5

[H+]=10−5

After diluting 100 x

We’ll get [H+]=10−7

Pure water in room temperature will be ionized to hydrogen and hydoxide ion in equilibrium state. Both have the concentration of 10−7

Hence the pH of 7 for pure water.

Now, in solution there are 10–7 hydrogen ion from dilute acid. This will effect the equilibrium. So the equilibrium will go to water formation. This will lower the hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion from ionized water. So the concentration of hydrogen ion (from ionized water and acid) will slightly higher than hydroxide ion.

If u use a powerfull equation solver, u will get the pH of 6.9…….

Otherwise u will get pH of 7
