H₂O ⇌ H⁺ + OH⁻

Since HCl is a strong acid, it ionizes completely.

Now, we know that :-

H⁺[HCl] = 1 × 10⁻⁸

Suppose [OH⁻] = x

H⁺ = x + 1 × 10⁻⁸

Kw = [H][OH] = 1 × 10¹

⇒ (x + 1 × 10⁻⁸)(x) = 1 × 10⁻¹⁴

⇒ x² + 1 × 10⁻⁸x = 1 × 10⁻¹⁴

⇒ x² + 1 × 10⁻⁸x - 1 × 10⁻¹⁴ = 0

⇒ x = 9.5 × 10⁻⁸

[H⁺] = x + 1 × 10⁻⁸

= 9.5 × 10⁻⁸ + 1 × 10⁻⁸

= 1.05 × 10⁻⁷ mol L⁻¹
