Sodium thiopental(STP) is a direct myocardial depressant which produces peripheral vasodilation resulting in decreased mean arterial pressure (MAP), and produces a reflex tachycardia.
Thiopental binds at a distinct binding site associated with chlorine ionophore at the GABA receptor, increasing the duration of time for which the chlorine ionophore is open. The post synaptic inhibitory effect of GABA in thalamus is therefore prolonged.
