Answer:

There are three phases of growth. They are

  • Meristematic/formative
  • Elongation
  • Maturation

1. Meristematic phase:

The growth occurs in the meristematic cells of shoot and root tips. These cells are small in size, have dense protoplasm, large nucleus and small vacuoles. These cells divide continuously by mitotic cell division. Some cells enter the next phase of growth while others retain the capability of cell division.

2. Elongation Phase:

Newly formed daughter cells increases the volume. They require auxin and food supply for the deposition of new cell wall materials, addition of protoplasm and development of central vacuole.

3. Maturation Phase:

The cells mature during this phase. Thickening and differentiation takes place. The cells do not grow further, after differentiation.

                          Hope it helps you^_^
