Phenol

carbonic acid or phenol is an aromatic organic compound. It has a molecular formula C_{6} H_{5} OH. In its physical form, it's a white crystalline solid and is volatile in nature. It is also mildly acidic in nature.

Phenol is a stronger acid than water, reasons

  • Phenol is mildly acidic and causes burns and hence should be handled carefully. In the compound, it has a benzene ring and hence it is called a phenole as the hydrogen of the benzene is replaced by a hydroxyl group.
  • in the water molecule, the negative charge resides on the electronegative atom that is oxygen. When seen in phenoxide ions the negative charge, in addition to the electronegative oxygen atom also gets delocalized in the whole molecule.
  • As a result, there will be four resonating structures of the ion- phenoxide. This gives the molecule enhanced stability when compared to the hydroxide ions.

Hence, the resonance imparts great stability to the phenoxide ion making the electron delocalize in the whole ion. This makes phenol a stronger acid than water.
