Atmospheric refraction is the phenomenon caused by bending of light when travelling from various layers of earth's atmosphere. Since the atmospheric air have low densities on moving up, light continuously bends towards the surface when coming down. This results in the formation of brightness before sunrise and after sunset. The actual reason is that sun remains in the sky in these times but due to retraction we can't see it.
