Phenylacetylene on treatment with HgSO4/H2SO4, H2O produces acetophenone.

◆ Explaination -

When phenylacetylene reacts with HgSO4/dil.H2SO4, acetophenone is formed.

C6H5-C≡CH + H2O → C6H5-CO-CH3

Direct electrophilic addition of water molecule over C≡C bond has slow rate. Therefore, HgSO4/H2SO4 are used as catalysts.
