I believe, he was a Sufi and their understanding of Heaven and hell is very different than the general idea of reward and punishment in Islam. For instance, heaven for a Sufi would be to attain the highest level of knowledge (illm-e-gaib) or to merge into the light of Allah. Likewise the hell, is some place where the Nur of Allah doesn't reach, even though one does everything to get there and the obstacles are going to stop or slow him/her down.
Once you're a Sufi/Mystic, everything you observe and read, it's essense and core principles are based on sprituality and its destination is unity and infinity.
