Phosphorus, Sulphur and chlorine are the elements of the third period of the Modern Periodic Table having group number 15,16 and 17 respectively. Which one of these elements has the (a) largest atomic radius, (b) maximum non-metallic character and (c) highest valency? Justify your answer stating reason for each.​

a) Phosphorus because on moving from left to right in a period of the periodic table, the size of atoms decreases.

b) Chlorine because on moving left to right in a period, the metalic character of elements decreases (but the non - metalic character increases).

c) Phosphorus because on moving left to right in each short period, the valency of elements increases from 1 to 4 and then decreases to 0.
