Photorespiration in C3 plants starts from phosphoglycolate.

* Photorespiration takes place when the enzyme for carbon fixation, RuBisCO reacts with oxygen instead of carbon dioxide to produce 3-phosphoglycerate and 2-phosphoglycolate.

* The phosphoglycerate is the usual product and enters the dark cycle of photosynthesis.

* Phosphoglycolate inhibits photosynthetic enzymes, which again is converted back to phosphoglycerate at the cost of an ATP molecule.
