● Reaction -

Phthalic acid gets dehydrated on treatment with concentrated H2SO4 to form phthalic anhydride.

Phthalic acid + Conc.H2SO4 --> Phthalic anhydride

Phthalic anhydride further reacts with resorsinol to form fluorescin.

Phthalic anhydride + resorcinol --> Fluorescein
