Phycology is the scientific study of algae.

Phycology includes the study of prokaryotic forms such as blue-green algae or cyanobacteria. Phycologists typically focus on either freshwater or ocean algae, and either diatoms or soft algae.

Algae are important primary producers in aquatic ecosystems. Most of algae are eukaryotic, chlorophyll containing photosynthetic organisms live in wet environment. Algae are different from higher plants due to lack of true roots, stem or leaves.

Algae do not flower. Many algal species are single celled and microscopic such as phytoplankton and other microalgae while many others are multicellular capable of growing larger size such as seaweeds.

Algae exhibit a wide range of reproductive strategies, from simple asexual cell division to complex forms of sexual reproduction.
