Matter can be broken down into two categories: pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances are further broken down into elements and compounds. Mixtures are physically combined structures that can be separated into their original components. A chemical substance is composed of one type of atom or molecule.

Answer :

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.

Matter exists in three physical states : solid, liquid and gas.

  • A solid is composed of matter where the particles have strong attractive forces, are close together and have fixed positions. Solids have a definite shape and a definite volume.
  • A liquid is composed of matter where the particles are close together but have weak attractive forces so that, they are able to move past one another therefore, liquids have a definite volume but not a definite shape.
  • A gas is made up of atoms or molecules with large interparticle distances, which move independently in all directions in random motion. Gases neither have definite volume nor definite shape.
