India's physical feature can be divided into the following ways:-

  • The Himalayas
  • Northern Plains
  • Peninsular Plateau
  • Coastal regions
  • Islands

The Himalayas

It includes the Pamir mountain ranges in Central Asia, north of India formed by the junction or knot of the Himalays, Tien Shan, Karakoram, Kunlun and Hindukush ranges. The Karokaram and Himalays are located along the northern boundary if India.

The Himalayas are further divided into the following three parts:-

  • The Himadri
  • The Himachal
  • The Shivalik

The Northern Plains

The vast plain of India between Himalayas to the north and the peninsular plateau to the South is formed by the Indus Ganga Brahmaputra Plains. It is an aggradational plain formed by the depositional work of three major systems viz. the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra.

The Great Plain of India can be divided into four major parts:-

  • The Thar Desert
  • The Indus Punjab - Haryana Plain
  • The Ganga plain
  • The Brahmaputra plain

Peninsular Plateau

The Indian Plateau is also known as the Peninsular Plateau. It is a part of the old landmass known as the Gondawana land.

It consists of four parts:-

  • The Indian Plateau
  • The Deccan Plateau
  • The Western Ghats
  • The Eastern Ghats

Coastal Regions

The Coastal regions comprises of the areas that lie near the coast (of a sea or an ocean).

The Coastal Plains of India can be divided into three parts:-

  • The Gujarat Plains
  • The Western Coastal Plains
  • The Eastern Coastal Plains

Islands

The Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are the two main islands of India. They lie in the Bay of Bengal between 6°N and 14°N latitude. There are 550 islands. Most of them are too small to be inhabited. The Nicobar group consists of 19 islands. The Islands of Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi in the Arabian Sea also known as Lakshadweep. They lie between 8°N and 12°N latitude.
