Question :-

Physical properties of non metals??

Answer :-

The element which lack the characteristic properties of metals like lustre, hardess, malleability, ductility and conductivity, etc are called non-metals.

1. Physical State :-

Unlike metals, non-metals can exit in a solid, liquid or gaseous state. Carbon, sulphur, phosphorus, etc are solids; bromine is liquid; and chlorine, bromine, iodine, helium, etc are gases.

2. Lustre :-

All the non-metals lack the lustre that metals have, and our dual in appearance .But iodine and graphite our exceptions. They are shiny.

3. Hardness :-

Non-metals are soft and unlike metals. But the strange thing is that the hardest substance known is diamond, which is the allotrope of carbon, a non-metal.

4. Malleability :-

Non-metals are non-malleable. They do not flatten into sheets when hammered. Rather, they break down on hammering. These types of substances are called brittle.

5. Ductility :-

Non-metals are non-ductile. That means they cannot be drawn into wires.

6. Non-Sonorous :-

Non-metals do not produce ringing sound on striking. In other words, they are non-sonorous.

7. Insulator of Heat :-

Non-metals do not allow it to pass through them. So, they don't get heated up. That's why handles of cooking vessels are made up of non-metals.

8. Insulator of Electricity :-

Non-metals do not conduct electricity through them. Only graphite is an exception.

9. Low Melting and Boiling Points :-

Non-metals comparatively low melting and boiling points. But graphite, a non-metals, has the Highest melting point of all the elements.
