Physically challenged people can be independent like their normal counterparts if the latter help them a little. Public areas can be designed so that the differently abled find them user friendly. As normal human beings blessed without any problems, we can also contribute towards helping them overcome their problem. Simple acts of kindness go a long way in making them feel comfortable.
For example, if a person is bound to a wheelchair, you can offer to push the wheelchair for him/her. Similarly, if you find a mute person trying to convey something to another person, you can try interpreting the message and getting it across.

Seeing someone with a disability is surely surprising but never stare any disabled person in a way that make them feel awkward.
If you are communicating with a person on a wheelchair, always sit down near them so that they don't strain their neck by looking up to you.
Transportation is a major barrier in the lives of physically challenged people. There should be a separate pavement or ramp for disabled people and fixed accommodation in public trains and buses.
All shops, hospitals, restaurants and parks should have elevators or lifts so that disabled people do not face any social, economical and attitudinal barrier and participate fully and effectively in the society.
